Story of Me
Hi! I’m 22, Chinese-Canadian and I study Combined Computer Science and Biology at the University of British Columbia. My academic interest is bioinformatics, but I am also interested in web design and development. I am very, very fond of chocolate especially the dark variety, cupcakes and sweets in general…Plus, I basically live on milk tea.
Short History
I started up learning HTML one summer long ago, maybe it was the summer between the 8th and 9th grades. I was bored and it seemed cool? I borrowed some books from the library, poked around at graphic design sites and built myself a blog that was in all probability, lame. From there I started making web templates and putting them up for free download on my web design site, Tarnished Silver. At this time I pieced together a “management system” for my web templates and log entries using PHP and MySQL by following tutorials, mainly at CodeGrrl. I had no idea what I was doing, really. The quality of my code must have been appalling – not to mention the security holes! Never the less, it was a start. Now I’m at university learning to code “for real”, I have been a Ugrad TA for a 100-level CPSC course, am almost done my second bioinformatics co-op (internship) and still have lots to learn!
See-why?
The domain name is a pun on my initials. Christine Yu, CY, See-Why… I admit I’m not the best at coming up with domain names, over the years I’ve used ice-core.org, tarnished-silver.net and opaqueness.org. The first two were gifted but still it was me who came up with the not-so-inspired names. Currently I own see-why.net and tea-and-chocolate.com, which I have no idea why I registered as I have no plans for it. Haha! It sounds yummy, though?
Crafts
I love DIY crafts. Polymer clay, shrink plastic, deco…I am not very artistically talented, but it is so much fun. I got my ears pierced last year because I wanted to make earrings for myself. One hole pierced at a strange angle, and a piercing infection later all I can say is don’t get your ears pierced at Claire’s. I waited for the holes to close and got re-pierced at Next! but the jury is still out as to whether that was a success, I seem to take forever to heal.
